What Can Genetic Testing Do For You?

Chicago Genetic Consultants’ genetic testing services allows individuals to assess their risk of certain genetic conditions with a comfort in knowing that you will be making fully informed decisions about your health. The decision to evaluate your risk of having or developing a genetic condition can be difficult. There are many complexities that go into your decision to undergo genetic testing, and meeting with a qualified, certified and licensed genetic counselor is the first step in seeing if genetic testing is a good choice for you.

Chicago Genetic Consultants provides genetic consultations via phone or video consultations (telehealth), and if genetic testing is performed, genetic testing can be done in your home in most cases.

Chicago Genetic Consultants Services Include:

Cancer Genetics

Understanding if a cancer is due to a hereditary cancer syndrome can impact treatment decisions, recommendations for future cancer screening, and cancer risks for family members. Genetic testing for a hereditary cancer syndrome should be considered for any individuals with a personal or family history of specific cancer types.

Cardiac Genetics

Hereditary forms of heart disease, if not known about or left untreated, can be fatal. However, with early identification and intervention, some forms of hereditary cardiac disease can be managed and treated so they do not become life-threatening. We work with individuals with a personal and/or family history of a variety of cardiac conditions.

Carrier Screening

Carrier screening is a type of genetic testing that is generally done before prospective parents start their family planning to get a better sense of whether they are at risk of having a child with a rare genetic condition. Often, but not always, there is no family history of these conditions. Current carrier screening tests can test for hundreds of different genetic disorders.

Neurogenetic Testing

There are many issues unique to genetic counseling and testing for neurogenetic conditions that should be discussed prior to testing such as treatment (or sometimes lack of treatment), family planning, how to handle life and long-term care insurance and disability care, and getting involved with research. Pharmacogenetics

Knowing your genetic make-up can provide insights into helping your healthcare providers make informed choices when prescribing medications for certain conditions such as depression and anxiety, clotting, gastroesophageal reflux disease, high cholesterol and others. Pharmacogenetic testing is not appropriate for all medications, but speaking with a genetic counselor can help you determine whether you may be a candidate for this testing.

Ocular Genetics

Many of the hereditary ocular conditions are rare in the general population and involve an optometrist or ophthalmologist to make the diagnosis. Making the correct diagnosis can help your physician determine if there are any other health issues that may arise aside from vision problems and whether there are any specific treatments that need to be considered.
